Isles has been the fastest player in world rugby for some time now (apart from Olympian Warren Weir who represented Jamaica’s Sevens team outside if the World Rugby Sevens Series). Although when Australia signed Williams, they had a player that had clocked a faster time over 100m than the former USA sprinter.
Williams time of 10.10 seconds is marginally better than Isles’ 10.13 but when Twitter began to suggest that the Australian was faster Isles claimed otherwise.
Former England Sevens captain Rob Vickerman retweeted Williams’ signing and joked about the pair having a race only for Isles to reply that he would not lose if it happened.
The argument could be that although stats on the track show that Williams has clocked a faster time, on the rugby pitch with a grass surface Isles may have a slight advantage.
However, the 22-year-old Australian did play rugby during his younger years which could mean that he is suited to the surface.
It’s good to see Isles be confident in his abilities after being the fastest for so long and the only way we will know for sure who is the king of rugby speedsters is when the two finally face off during next seasons Sevens tournaments.
Sonny Bill Slammed for ‘Pressure’ Comments
Sonny Bill Williams took aim at the people criticising him last night, but a former Black Cap has fired shots straight back at the All Black
Former Black Cap Mark Richardson has crushed Sonny Bill Williams comments on Twitter in which he took a shot at his critics and the media.
Richardson, now a broadcaster was speaking on Three’s The AM Show discussed Williams comments where he suggested people “get their priorities right” instead of criticising his performances.
“I’d suggest that doing one’s job is the most important priority for a sports journo, so do you deny the right of a sports journo to do their job, Sonny Bill? So they can feed their families Sonny Bill? Just like you get paid to do your job Sonny Bill, which I assume is a priority of yours to care for your family Sonny Bill,” he said.
Williams claimed that people should care about things such as “starving children, the single mother raising 3 kids, the atrocities refugees are facing around the world, racism”. All of which Richardson agreed with but he believes that people can discuss the All Black’s form if they want to.
“Honestly Sonny, yes there are people struggling in the world and yes we care about them. But you are an All Black. Get over yourself and let people in this country talk what they like to talk and that is rugby,” he added.
Fellow host Duncan Garner went on to take a dig at Williams and his views.
“Sonny Bill, he’s precious,” he said.
Williams is currently set to play for Counties Manukau in the Mitre 10 Cup this Saturday along with Nepo Laulala, as Williams tries to prove his fitness to All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen.
The centre has been plagued by injury in recent times and has struggled to find a consistent run of form which has called on people to question his selection for this year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan.
It appears as though Williams frustration at the whispers on the street boiled over yesterday as he took to social media to put critics in their place.
“And for those that say I’m under pressure playing a game that I enjoy. Get your priorities right. Look at what’s going on in the world. Starving children, the single mother raising 3 kids, the atrocities refugees are facing around the world, racism. This is what I call pressure,” he said.
Williams’ comments are likely to only add fuel to the fire and it seems like he will have to perform on the pitch to convince people he is worthy of another World Cup journey.
He will join back up with the All Blacks squad ahead of their second Bledisloe Cup game in Auckland on August 10th and will be hoping to prove his case for selection.
WATCH: Cricket streaker deserves a rugby contract #LegDrive
Yes, it’s not technically rugby… but this #LegDrive belongs on a rugby pitch, not a cricket wicket.
A bold streaker wearing nothing but a green hat ran onto the field during the Cricket World Cup match between England and New Zealand on Wednesday and provided the crowd and viewers with around five minutes of entertainment that had a packed crowd roaring with laughter.
The security didn’t possess the defensive prowess of a Shaun Edwards coached defensive line with the streaker breaking the ‘tackle attempts’ of 5 security guards. The orange vested guard certainly can’t be expecting too many compliments on his contribution.
Thankfully he was stopped for a second time and taken from the pitch. The sport’s governing body, the International Cricket Council, later said he had been arrested.
Will Genia hints that his Super Rugby career is over.
The Rebels played their final conference game on Saturday against the Chiefs in Melbourne but came out the wrong side of a drubbing.
After the game, Wallabies and Rebels’ scrum-half Will Genia took to Instagram with a very poignant post.
Genia (31) uploaded a picture collage with a try-scoring picture of himself getting over the whitewash for the Queensland Reds and more recently, the Rebels.
His caption read, “What a ride Super Rugby”.
His contract with the Rebels expires this year and he has been tipped for another move overseas. Genia has had a stint in Europe previously with Stade Francais but it’s rumoured that a move to Japan is looking more likely.
Quade Cooper, his current half back partner with the Rebels and previously with the Reds and Wallabies commented on the post,
“Much love bro! Been unreal being back together ✊🏾❤️ love you bro”
Quade Cooper is another whose contract is up in the air. His deal with the Rebels also expires at the end of the Super Rugby campaign and he has also been widely linked with a move to Europe with Harlequins one of the favourites to land the mercurial playmakers signature.
