Exeter Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter has confirmed that Jack Nowell underwent surgery yesterday and believes he will still be in line to appear at the Rugby World Cup.
Nowell injured his ankle during the Chiefs 37-34 Premiership final loss to Saracens at the start of the month and had undergone scans on both his knee and ankle following the match.
The England and Lions winger has since been
on holiday with his family but returned and went under the knife for his ankle
injury on Tuesday.
Baxter sees no reason that Nowell will miss the World Cup or the start of the season.
“Jack has had an operation on his ankle and at this stage we see no reason why it should jeopardise him being involved with England at the Rugby World Cup nor with us heading into the new season,” he said.
It is believed that England head coach will pick Nowell if he is able to prove his fitness having started the flying winger in three of England’s five Six Nations matches earlier in the year.
Nowell will have little time to recover and get back on the pitch as England begin their World Cup warm-up games against Wales in August, with the tournament itself starting in mid-September.
