Ireland assistant coach Andy Farrell has confirmed that everyone bar Robbie Henshaw are in contention to play Scotland in the side’s Rugby World Cup opener in Japan.

The announcement comes as a boost for the Irish after reports earlier this week claimed that both full-back Rob Kearney and wing Keith Earls would join Henshaw on the sidelines. However, Farrell has confirmed that the duo have been training well and are on schedule to feature.

“We’re pleased with how things have gone today. Rob and Keith Earls ran well and trained well. There are a few protocols that they need to go to, so that’s what we need to adhere to with the medical staff. But they are very happy. They are available, so we’ve obviously another session to go on Friday. It is Wednesday. The game’s on Sunday, so we’re building nicely. Everybody (barring Robbie Henshaw) is available for selection,” he said.

As well as the pair of stars overcoming injury worries, Farrell has also confirmed that fly-half Joey Carbery, who injured his ankle in a warm-up game against Italy, is fully fit and ready for action.

“Joey’s been training well since Monday, so we’re in a good spot,” he added.

On Henshaw, Farrell admitted that there is no chance of him playing any role this weekend, but if he continues to recover at the same rate as he currently is then he should be available for next Saturday’s match against hosts Japan.

“Robbie won’t make this weekend, they are very happy with his progress but he will sit out this weekend and hopefully he will be available for next week. His progress has been great,” he finished.

Ireland begin their World Cup campaign against the Scots on Sunday, in what is expected to be the game that decides the winner of Pool A. However, they will face a tough test against Japan six days later before clashes with Samoa and Russia, but compared to earlier in the week things are looking a lot better for Ireland as they near a fully fit squad.
