With the Super Rugby season fast approaching Waratahs have secured the signing of coach Daryl Gibson on a one-year contract extension.

The move will see the 43-year-old remain in charge until the end of the 2020 season, after taking over from former coach Michael Cheika in 2016 following three years as his assistant.

Since he took the reins, he has guided his team to 10th and 16th place finishes before getting them to the semi-finals last time around.

Club boss Andrew Hore spoke of his delight at Gibson’s extension following the announcement.

“We are really pleased to have Daryl staying on board until the end of 2020,” he said.

Hore continued on to praise Gibson for his contribution
towards developing youth players at the club.

“Daryl has been a big driver in opening up our players and support staff to importance of giving back to the grassroots and helping reinvest in the game at the community level. He’s instilled purpose and identify in all that our players and support staff do,” he said.

“For Daryl, the focus has been on putting the structures and systems in place to not only bring through the younger talent, but invest in coaching and support staff,” he added.

Gibson also spoke of his delight in
continuing his stay in New South Wales.

“It is a real privilege to continue to serve NSW rugby for another season,” he said.

He also mirrored Hore’s comments about the importance
of grassroots rugby.

“I’ve been very open that I want to bring the next generation through as well as bed down the systems we have been working hard to put in place to keep our best rugby talent in the game,” he continued.

He finished up by speaking of his hopes for
what is to come.

“We have some great people in our ranks and I am excited to be working with them and hopefully delivering some more great results as we build towards the future,” he said.

The Waratahs will be looking to start the season off with a bang when they host the Hurricanes on Saturday with added energy knowing that Gibson is staying on.
