Ulster edged past Connacht 21-13 in their Pro 14 quarter-final at the Kingspan Stadium on Saturday evening.
The result means Ulster will now face a trip to Scotstoun to take on the Glasgow Warriors in the semi-finals on May 17th.
The hosts got off to a flying start as John Cooney knocked over a penalty on five minutes to give them a 3-0 lead.
Just before the quarter-hour mark Ulster scored the opening try of the game. Tiernan O’Halloran couldn’t control a high-ball and which allowed Robert Baloucoune to break.
That break eventually led to Nick Timoney Stepping inside Matt Healy and touching down for the home team. Cooney couldn’t supply the extras, but Ulster were up 8-0 after 15 minutes.
Connacht bounced back well, and Jack Carty got them up and running with a penalty on 29 minutes.
However, Ulster ended the half on a high when Cooney added another three points from his boot after Bundee Aki put in a high-tackle on Billy Burns. That was the final score of the half as Ulster went in 11-3 up.
Aki made up for his error just before the whistle 14 minutes into the second-half when he crossed the white-wash for a try following an intercept and offload by Colby Fainga’a. Carty slotted home the extras to leave one point between the sides it at 11-10.
Cooney pushed Ulster further ahead with another penalty after 61 minutes, only for Carty to return the favour and make it 14-13 with only 13 minutes remaining.
Connacht hearts were broken with minutes on the clock as Marcell Coetzee burst over for a try which Burns converted to seal an Ulster win on Rory Best and Darren Cave’s final home game.
Ulster will now prepare for a trip to Glasgow while Connacht head back West disappointed today but with Champions Cup rugby under their belts for next season.
