Boks Change 13 for Japan Quarter-Final | Huge Rugby News

Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed a total of 13 changes to his starting line-up for their Rugby World Cup quarter-final against hosts Japan on Sunday.

Having seen off Canada 66-7 the Boks have changed back to the starting XV that defeated Italy earlier in the pool stages.

That means that only Siya Kolisi and Damien de Allendre have retained their places.

Tendai Mtawarira comes back in alongside Bongi Mbonambi, who is selected ahead of Malcolm Marx, and Frans Malherbe in the front-row, with Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager slotting in behind them in the second-row.

Kolisi captains the side from blindside-flanker, with Pieter-Steph du Toit at openside-flanker, as Duane Vermeulen takes the No 8 jersey.

Faf de Klerk comes in again at scrum-half as Handre Pollard starts at fly-half, with de Allendre at inside-centre and Lukanyo Am at outside-centre.

There is huge excitement surrounding the back-three as Makazole Mapimpi is on the left-wing, with the electric Cheslin Kolbe on the right-wing as Willie le Roux completes the line-up from full-back.

The Springboks have plenty to call upon from the bench if needed with the likes of Marx, RG Snyman, Franois Loux and Frans Steyn among the replacements.

Speaking ahead of the last-eight clash Erasmus has admitted that he is happy with the performances of his team so far and is expecting a tough test against Japan on Sunday.

“We were satisfied with the performance against Italy and want to build on that. We have been improving and building momentum this season and we will be looking for further improvements this weekend. Japan are a well-coached team and have deservedly climbed to seventh in the world rankings. It’ll be a good challenge but we’re definitely up for it,” he said.

The Springboks are well aware of the threat that the Japanese possess having fallen to a shock loss to them in the 2015 Rugby World Cup and will hope to make amends for that defeat this time around. However, the tournament hosts have been extremely impressive so far and the Boks will need to play their best rugby if they are to make it to the semi-finals.
