Jordie Barrett commits to NZR and Hurricanes till the end of 2025
Jordie Barrett has officially put pen-to-paper on a new deal that will keep him in the capital with the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) through till the end of 2025.
The Taranaki representative says he is grateful to extend his contract with the Hurricanes and is honoured to don the swirl once again.
“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to live and play rugby in New Zealand. That is a dream I’ve had since I was a young kid,” said Barrett.
“I feel as though the Hurricanes franchise is in a really good place at the moment and I feel like the All Blacks are building towards something special.”
All Blacks head coach Ian Foster added: “I’m delighted with Jordie’s re-signing.”
“He’s become a massive part of our long-term plan. His commitment to New Zealand through till 2025 is fantastic news.”
Hurricanes head coach, Jason Holland, is thrilled to secure such a fantastic talent as the Hurricanes prepare for the DHL Super Rugby Pacific season in 2023.
“It’s great to get Jordie re-signed,” Holland said. “He is a quality man and player, so it’s awesome to have him re-commit to the club and wearing that yellow jersey for another three seasons.”
“He has a wealth of experience, is extremely versatile, and over the last few months he has reinforced his abilities at an international level. We’re not just signing a top-level Hurricane, but also a top-level All Black.”
A handy goal-kicker, Barrett further proved that versatility when he started in the All Blacks No.12 jersey for the first time in the Bledisloe Cup clash with Australia last month. He is also adept at wing or fullback.
“We are pleased that Jordie has committed his future to New Zealand Rugby and I am sure I echo the thoughts of all Taranaki fans in saying how proud we are to call him one of our own,” Taranaki chief executive Mike Sandle added.
“We cherish any opportunity to have our All Blacks playing for us and we would love to see him running out onto Yarrow Stadium in the Amber and Black hoops in the future.”
Born into a rugby-mad family, the 25-year-old is one of eight siblings which include fellow All Blacks Beauden and Scott. Their father, Kevin “Smiley” Barrett, played 167 games for Taranaki and played for the Hurricanes.
The 45-Test All Black is proud to follow in his father’s footsteps.
“Jordie is still a young man, who will only get better with time,” said Taranaki head coach Neil Barnes. “So naturally, I’m rapt he’s secured a long-term future in New Zealand. I’m sure he will continue to make his family and province very proud on and off the paddock.”
A talented fast bowler in cricket, Barrett had been tagged for big things as a student at New Plymouth’s Francis Douglas Memorial College. He chose rugby and headed south to Lincoln University to study commerce.
In 2016, after just one season of domestic rugby, Barrett toured as an apprentice with the All Blacks to the Northern Hemisphere.
The following year saw Barrett burst onto the Super Rugby scene, playing 17 games and scoring 135 points in his debut season before being selected for the All Blacks.

Munster Rugby and the IRFU are pleased to confirm contract extensions for Conor Murray and Jack Daly with Brian Gleeson to be promoted from the Academy to the senior squad next season.
Murray and Daly have signed one-year extensions with Gleeson moving up to the senior squad on a two-year deal.
Gleeson is one of five Academy players moving up to the senior squad next year with Tony Butler, Ethan Coughlan, Mark Donnelly and Edwin Edogbo also signing two-year deals.
Conor Murray is one of the most decorated scrum-halfs in world rugby with 116 Ireland caps and three British & Irish Lions tours to his name.
A former St Munchin’s College student, the Garryowen man won his fifth 6 Nations title with Ireland last month and earned his second league title with Munster last season.
The 34-year-old has made 185 Munster appearances and scored 34 tries for the province to date and was named on World Rugby’s Team of the Decade in 2019.
25-year-old flanker Jack Daly came up through the ranks at Castleisland RFC and made his Munster debut against Zebre in 2020.
Daly joined the Academy in 2018, moved up to the senior squad in 2021 and plays his AIL rugby with Garryowen. A former Ireland U20 international, he made his Champions Cup debut against Toulouse in the quarter-final at the Aviva Stadium in 2022.

20-year-old Gleeson moves up to the senior squad after just one year in the Academy that has seen him score one try in nine senior appearances.
Currently out of action with an ankle injury, he had already made three Champions Cup appearances before turning 20.
The powerful back-row forward was a Grand Slam winner with the Ireland U20s last year. plays his AIL rugby with Garryowen and came up through the ranks at Thurles RFC and Rockwell College.

Head Coach Andy Farrell has named his Ireland Match Day Squad for Saturday’s Guinness Men’s Six Nations clash against Scotland at Aviva Stadium (Kick-off 4.45pm).
Ireland – currently sitting top of the Six Nations table heading into Super Saturday – can clinch back-to-back Championship titles with victory over Scotland in Dublin.
Farrell has named an unchanged starting XV for the Round 5 clash, as Hugo Keenan, Calvin Nash and James Lowe continue in the Ireland back three. Robbie Henshaw and Bundee Aki are once again selected in midfield, with Jack Crowley and Jamison Gibson-Park the starting half-backs.
Andrew Porter, Dan Sheehan and Tadhg Furlong pack down in the front row, with Joe McCarthy partnering Tadhg Beirne – who is set to win his 50th Test cap for Ireland – in the engine room.
Captain Peter O’Mahony is at blindside flanker, Josh van der Flier is at openside and Caelan Doris completes the starting XV at number eight.
The Ireland Coaching Team have opted for a 5-3 split on the bench, with Rónan Kelleher, Cian Healy, Finlay Bealham, Ryan Baird and Jack Conan providing the reinforcements up front, and Conor Murray, Harry Byrne and the fit-again Garry Ringrose the backline options.
