England Rugby have issued a statement to say that Jack Nowell will stay in the country to continue his rehabilitation for his ankle injury.
The Exeter Chiefs back, who injured his ankle during his sides 37-34 Gallagher Premiership final loss to Saracens underwent surgery shortly after the incident.
However, although the statement provided an update on his injury status it failed to give any indication of when he will return to action.
“Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs) has returned home for a routine surgical review of his ankle. The winger will continue his rehabilitation in England while the squad are in Treviso until the end of the week (August 2nd),” the statement read.
As the statement says the rest of the squad will continue their preparations in Italy for this year’s World Cup while Nowell remains in England.
At the time of the injury Exeter Chiefs director of rugby said the saw “no reason why it (the injury) should jeopardise him being involved with England at the Rugby World Cup”.
However, with the tournament less than two months away now and with there still being no indicator on a return date for Nowell it appears as though his chances of playing at the World Cup are decreasing.
England should have enough cover in the back-line if Nowell fails to recover in time, but with the Chiefs star in fine-form pre-injury head coach Eddie Jones would love to be able to have him available for selection.
